The job search starts long before you are ready to look for a position or to interview with an organization. Use the list below to check-off your way through the job search!

Become familiar with the job search & application process.

Suggested completion timeframe: Start process at beginning of final year of program

____ Assess self, education, experience, and identify goals:

What are your career goals?

What type of environment do you prefer to work in?

Where do you want to be in five years?

Where do you want to live, and what lifestyle do you want to maintain?

____ Research information on your industry and your chosen career

____ Prepare materials including your resume and ask for letters of recommendation

____ Make an appointment with a Career Consultant to review your resume, and discuss your job search

 

Generate job leads.

Suggested completion timeframe: Start process at beginning of final year of program

____ Locate information sources and conduct informational interviews

____ Research job postings from websites, professional organizations, your program, and other sources

____ Make contacts through family, friends, professors, Career Center, co-workers, and industry associations

 

Apply for jobs.

Suggested completion timeframe: final year of program until employed

____ Write a cover letter that is tailored to each position

____ Compile references and contact them for permission

____ Complete job applications

____ Send out cover letters, resumes and prepare for interviewing

 

Prepare for the interview.

Suggested completion timeframe: final year of program until employed

____ Consider your experiences and what you are looking for in a career

____ Complete a mock interview by scheduling one through the Career Center

____ Have professional interview attire and ensure it is clean, pressed, and ready to go at least one day before an interview

____ Communicate clearly during interviews by thinking about commonly asked questions and examples from your relevant experiences

____ Prepare questions to ask during interviews

 

Send acknowledgements.

Suggested completion timeframe: within one day of the interview

____ Send thank you notes to all interviewers

____ Notify references you have had an interview and they may be contacted

 

Evaluate job offers.

Suggested completion timeframe: final year of program until employed

____ Evaluate which offer most closely aligns with your career goals, including opportunities for growth and advancement, location, and salary

 

Accept position.

Suggested completion timeframe: final year of program until employed

____ Notify employers of decisions to accept or decline offers

____ Send thank you notes to references

____ Notify the Career Center and update the post-graduation plans survey with employment information
