Job Shadowing & Site Visits

The School of Education offers job shadow and site visit opportunities over winter break (January) every year to allow students to explore common career pathways for those interested in Health Promotion & Health Equity and Educational Policy Studies. This experience allows you to take a closer look at the day in the life of a particular career, to get a better idea of what you like or dislike, and to network.

Achieving Collaborative Treatment (ACT)

Who: ACT provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for autistic individuals.

What: Dive deeper into each respective role at ACT- entry level roles working 1:1 with clients, medium level role that works 1:1 with clients but also does more administrative work and client data collection, upper level roles who write individualized treatment programs for client’s and conduct training programs for families. Learn about sources of curriculum used, discuss a specific client and their programming, discuss collaboration with schools if client attends school and what that looks like, and possible see a client during a session, and discuss educational path to becoming a Senior/Lead/Board Certified Behavior Analyst Therapist.

City of Madison - Child Care Unit Team & The Community Development Division

Who: The Community Development Division collaborates with residents, neighborhoods, and other community stakeholders to overcome barriers to opportunity in order to support a vibrant community, shared prosperity, and resident and community wellbeing.

What: Attend a hosted panel of presenters who will cycle through to share about their roles and their experiences working at the City and a tour of Madison Municipal and Madison County buildings as part of the morning.

Epic

Who: We develop software that helps people get well, helps people stay well, and helps future generations be healthier.

What: For this Epic site-visit, we will begin the day with a 30-minute overview of Epic from a recruiter. Then, we will have a 30-minute panel from staff that tie to School of Education fields. Finally, we will provide an hour-long tour of Epic. Coffee & snacks will be provided.

Presenters Include: 

  • Trainer: We lead training sessions for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare users prior to their Epic Go-Live.
  • User Experience Designer: We shape the user interface and experience of our next generation of applications while working side-by-side with our talented development team.
  • Health Equity: Staff at Epic who serve on a health equity committee as part of their role

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR)

Who: Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center.

What: Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) will host one student at each of the two January Friday Night Features events. This will offer a unique opportunity for a student to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world community setting. The goals and discussion points will focus on community health, program implementation, and professional development.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin

Who: Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) is the advocacy arm of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, the state’s largest and most trusted reproductive health care provider. PPAWI educates and lobbies on behalf of reproductive health and works to elect candidates who support family planning and the full range of reproductive health care.

What: We will be outlining events to fit in with our larger political goals, thinking of new ways to attract and engage volunteers, and get into the behind-the-scenes world of political organizer around reproductive health issues. Prepare to explore the State Capitol, familiarize yourself current state legislative processes & state policy, and see what lobbying in Wisconsin actually looks like!

Job Titles Being Shadowed:

  • Public Affairs Organizer for Dane County: I do all of our Madison-area policy engagement and political education. I plan a lot of events to keep our supporters up to date on new policies, supervise our college chapter at UW Madison, organize our volunteers, and connect with other like minded organizations. During election season, I also help campaign for PPAWI-endorsed candidates.
  • Government Relations Specialist: I am responsible for maintaining relationships with state and local elected officials in order to ensure they’re educated in reproductive health work and to help advance reproductive health care policy. I typically meet electeds while they run for office as I also manage PPAWI’s endorsement process. Additionally, the GR Specialist tracks proposed state legislation to ensure leadership has enough information to make strategic decisions about the organization’s priorities. I am the organization’s lobbyist as well, so when PPAWI attempts to influence legislation, in both support of and against, I help to get that message across to state legislators on behalf of PPAWI.

Public Health Madison & Dane County

Who: Public Health Madison & Dane County is the local health department for Madison & Dane County. We have a staff of more than 225 people and serve over 575,000 in more than 60 cities, villages, and towns. Our mission is to work with the community to enhance, protect, and promote the health of the environment and well-being of all people. Our work is rooted in the following core values: Health is a Human Right, Science, Health and Racial Equity, Relationships, & Stewardship.

What: Shadow the Health Education Coordinator and discuss career pathways as well as be introduced to the department’s Communications and Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) teams. This role splits time between Health Education (60%) and Public Health Emergency Preparedness. This half day experience will include things like a welcome/introduction to Public Health & Education Coordinator role, attending team meetings, and a tour of the downtown office.

Reach Dane

Who: Reach Dane is a nonprofit agency serving Dane and Green counties with educational and supportive services for families who are underserved. We provide education for children, family support and health services for children enrolled in our Early Head Start and Head Start programs, both center-based and home-based.

What: Depending on what the interest area is of the student, we will develop a schedule together. Mainly working with a specific person in one of the roles below, following them through the day, then meeting with them to ask any questions. If in the classroom, there will be specific guidelines we will go over.

Job Titles Being Shadowed:

  • 4K Lead Teacher – Develop play-based curriculum learning activities for 3-4 yr olds in a classroom-based model; Supervise teaching assistants, manage day to day needs of the classroom
  • Site Director – Manage the day-to-day needs of a preschool/early learning center; supervise and mentor staff; attend meetings as needed.
  • Education Manager – Support and supervise Site directors; help develop training for staff in areas of curriculum development, leadership development and agency mission.
  • Director of Business Operations and Career Pathways – oversight of the agency mission and vision; supervise managers of various departments, including the education manager; support staff with career needs and options.
  • Human Resources – various roles in supporting staff in their work, managing hiring and other staffing needs in all departments; recruiting for staff, managing benefits for staff, managing regulatory requirements for staff and the agency.

Supreme Health & Fitness

Who: Open since 1976, Supreme offers over 30+ live AND streaming group exercise classes per week included with membership, a state-of-the-art fitness center, salt water pool facilities, 6 racquetball courts with programming among the best in the nation, and much more.

What: A day hanging out with a few trainers and group fitness staff. Your day may include observing workouts with clients of various fitness levels, new member intakes, and group fitness classes.

Job Titles Being Shadowed: 

  • Personal Trainers: working one on one with various clients developing and implementing fitness programs based on their individual needs.
  • Group Exercise: Designing and leading various group exercise classes. Examples are: Yoga, Indoor Cycling, BodyPump, GRIT, Boot Camp, Water Fitness, TRX, and Zumba

UW Health - Apprenticeship Programs

Who: UW Health is the integrated health system of the University of Wisconsin–Madison serving more than 800,000 patients each year in the Upper Midwest and beyond with more than 1,800 employed physicians and over 24,000 employees at six hospitals and more than 90 primary and specialty outpatient locations in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

What: Apprenticeship programs, (CNA, MAs, among others) will be shadowed to show how career advancements can be made through alternative options within a healthcare system.

UW-Madison, Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (UW CIPE)

Who:The University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (UW CIPE) is a University Center established in 2016 and being supported by the University Health Sciences Leadership Council (the UW Provost Office, and the Deans of the four health sciences schools – School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy and School of Veterinary Medicine). Our Mission is to work collaboratively locally, nationally and globally to champion, integrate, and advance Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE) to achieve the Quintuple Aim: better population health, better patient care, better value, better provider work experience, and better health equity.

What: Students will shadow three UW CIPE staff. There will also be a student hourly who had formerly participated in the Job Shadow Program! Students will engage in activities to learn more about interprofessional education and collaborative practice and how IPE impacts patient care. Students will also participate in our weekly team huddle where we strategize our work. Lunch will be provided.

UW-Madison, Center for Teaching, Learning & Mentoring

Who: In collaboration with the crucial work done in and by schools and colleges, the Center for Teaching, Learning & Mentoring (CTLM) supports UW–Madison faculty and staff in their continuing growth as practitioners of the complex, challenging, and dynamic craft of teaching.
Bringing together about 50 professional staff members with extensive and wide-ranging expertise, the center serves instructors at all career stages, including teaching assistants, by offering campus-level professional development, course design, and instructional consulting programs and services.

What: A shadow experience in the Center for Teaching, Learning & Mentoring (CTLM) will provide opportunities to learn how UW supports faculty and instructors at all career stages, offering campus-level professional development, course design, and consulting services. Students who participate in a job shadow will have the opportunity to sit in on educational development programming. This will include large events like the pre-semester teaching preparedness program that the center organizes. Students will also meet with team members from across the center over lunch to learn more about pathways toward different forms of educational development and instructor support roles.

UW-Madison, McBurney Disability Resource Center

Who: The McBurney Disability Resource Center is the office for students with disabilities and classroom accommodations on the UW-Madison campus. As part of the student accommodation process, we work collaboratively with students and instructors to provide and support effective student accommodations.

What: Students will learn about the different types of jobs that exist within a university’s disability resource center.

UW-Madison, Recreation and Wellbeing - Athletic Training

Who: Rec Well: We move Badgers to play hard, get fit, and live well.

What: Students will an opportunity to meet with our Athletic Training staff for approximately one hour to ask questions, observe our clinic spaces, and learn and play with our tools and treatment devices. If after this the students are interested in observing more, they can sign up to be a part of our formal observation student cohort that we organize every semester.

Job Titles Being Shadowed:

  • Athletic Trainers: Licensed health care providers who evaluate, diagnose, rehabilitate and treat all musculoskeletal injuries of all active populations. Athletic trainers also treat individuals who experience chronic pain. ATs at Rec Well have appointment based clinics where we perform evaluations/rehabilitation, and address all patient concerns/questions. As ATs at Rec Well we also provide medical coverage for sport club events over the weekend. This usually involves triaging athletes who are injured in events, and referring them to the correct health care facility or scheduling follow-ups with our staff in the clinics on campus.

UW-Madison, School of Education

Who: The School of Education Student Service units are areas within higher education that focus on the student experience and provide services directly to the students. The School of Education Student Services consists of Admissions, Scholarships, Academic Advising, Career Services, Center for Community and Well-Being, and Global Engagement.

What: Students can expect to learn about various career paths within Higher Education, specifically Student Affairs. Things students will potentially gain exposure to are shadowing student appointments, listening and learning in department or campus meetings, and time dedicated to talking with current staff.

Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (AHEC)

Who: Wisconsin Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) is a health professions education and outreach program funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health. As part of a nationwide network, our mission is to improve the accessibility and quality of primary healthcare.
Wisconsin AHEC’s Role: The AHEC program encourages universities and educators to form partnerships that address community health needs. By decentralizing health professions training and linking communities with academic health centers, we promote cooperative solutions to local health problems.

Today, Wisconsin AHEC offers a variety of education and training programs aimed at increasing the diversity and distribution of the healthcare workforce. We enhance healthcare quality and delivery in rural and medically underserved communities across Wisconsin’s 72 counties.

What: Shadow the Program Manager for a day. Meet with them in person to get an introduction to AHEC and the programs they run. Together, you’ll host a virtual session for the AHEC Scholars program, where a guest speaker will present on stigma related to substance use disorder in rural communities. You’ll observe what it’s like to coordinate and lead a program, see how we collaborate with health educators, and learn how we follow up after hosting an event.

  • Program Manager: The program manager designs and manages programs that help students and professionals explore careers in healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas. They work with the universities, hospitals, and community organizations to create hands-on learning experiences and connect people with opportunities. A big part of the job is organizing projects, keeping partners connected, and making sure programs run smoothly.

Wisconsin Athletics - Badgers Give Back

Who: The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison provides student-athletes with opportunities to excel and thereby advance their athletic, academic, and social development. In doing so, we endeavor to field competitive teams that display growth, integrity, and accountability. These principles serve as cornerstones upon which a dynamic, fiscally responsible Department can flourish, mindful of its obligations to its staff, the university, alumni, and citizens of the state, whose support sustains its undertakings.
Badgers Give Back is the community service platform for student-athletes, staff, and alumni. Our office coordinates community service opportunities year-round, engages with key audiences, and manages all charitable activities for Wisconsin Athletics. In addition to community service, Engagement & Community Outreach (ECO) highlights how student-athletes use their platforms to benefit the community and handles all corporate sponsorship collaborations.

What: Join Badgers Give Back interns as they host community service activations for student-athletes. During January, several large events that include collaboration with the American Family Children’s Hospital, Boys & Girls Club, and Special Olympics of Wisconsin will be taking place. Job Shadow participants can plan on being thrown into the event planning and execution.

Wisconsin Department of Health Services

Who: The mission of Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services is to protect and promote the health and safety of the people of Wisconsin.

What: This will be a virtual experience where you will receive an overview of DHS and roles in the WI Public Health System. Will include a program overview in different areas, presented by DHS staff.

Wisconsin Literacy Inc.

Who: Wisconsin Literacy, Inc. supports 80 community-based literacy programs throughout Wisconsin. We strengthen literacy through expert training, health literacy, workforce connections, and advocacy.

What: All the students will rotate as a group from staff to staff. Students will also join in on one to two staff meetings covering Wisconsin Literacy’s Laptop Distribution and planning Wisconsin Literacy’s Winter Conference.
