Writing a diversity statement is an important part of many academic and professional applications. It provides you with an opportunity to express your experiences and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as you move forward in your career. A diversity statement is typically 1-2 pages in length. When writing your diversity statement avoid vague or general statements. Instead, use specific examples, anecdotes, and evidence. Diversity statements are an opportunity for you to describe your contributions, goals, and areas you wish to advance within diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as a researcher and educator. Below are some key considerations and tips to help you craft an effective diversity statement.

Getting Started
Start by reflecting on your experiences and define your understanding of diversity and inclusion:
What do these terms mean to you? How do they relate to your field of study or work? Your statement should reflect a thoughtful and well-developed understanding of these concepts.
Share Personal Experiences
Discuss the experiences that have shaped your understanding and values regarding DEI. These experiences can include personal, academic, and/or professional encounters that influence your perspective.
Highlight Past Contributions
Provide specific examples of your past contributions to DEI. This can include teaching experiences, research projects, community involvement, or any relevant activities that demonstrate your commitment to these principles.
Discuss Your Vision for the Future
Describe how you plan to make contributions to DEI in the future. What initiatives or strategies do you have in mind? How will you create an inclusive environment in your classroom, lab, or workplace?
Showcase Your Competence
Emphasize your competence in teaching, research, or other professional activities. Your statement should reflect your ability to effectively interact with diverse groups of students, colleagues, or communities.
Align with Institutional Values
Research the institution to which you are applying. Understand their commitment to DEI, and check if they have an institutional diversity statement. Ensure that your values align with those of the institution. You can mention specific programs, resources, or initiatives the institution has related to DEI.
Explain How You Can Contribute
Discuss how you can contribute to the DEI initiatives of the institution you are applying to or how you can enhance their resources related to DEI. Tailor your statement to show that your goals are in alignment with the institution’s.
Remember that your diversity statement reflects your personal and professional values and commitments. It should be honest and genuinely reflect your passion for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Tailor each statement to the specific institution or position you are applying for to demonstrate your alignment with their mission and goals.
